Over the past several months, Mile High Research has been conducting a study on the value of IT certification programs. We recently surveyed over 200 IT Professionals, Hiring Managers and Recruiters as part of our study. When asked what their biggest concern regarding the value of IT certifications, comments relating to the credential relevancy and respect were overwhelming top of mind.
IT professionals said:
Do employers really care about certification?
Recruiters said:
Does having a credential really mean candidates have the skills?
Hiring Managers said:
Does having a credential really mean candidates can immediately apply the skills necessary to be productive on the job?
The context for relevant and respected IT credentials -
Relevancy - is the ability of an IT certification to correctly assess the needed skills and the candidate’s ability to successfully apply them on the job. The certification is updated to latest technology release and emphasizes both the primary technology skill set and the job role of the individual. Employers can expect credential holders to have the skills and be productive immediately for jobs specifying this IT credential.
Respect – Industry respect for the credential is a hot issue for both credential holders and credential sponsors. IT credentials that are genuinely obtained, enhance the credibility and respect of the credential holder and the credential itself. Certification sponsors that have active, visible and enforced programs in place to punish cheaters and shut down braindump sites have credentials that are respected.
